Sustainability Policy

Sustainability Policy

At The Waterfront Boutique Hotel and The Waterfront Kitchen Café we are committed to protecting the natural environment, supporting our community and offering an exceptional experience that reflects the unique heritage and character of the Falkland Islands.

Sustainability guides every aspect of how we operate—from the energy that powers our property to the food we serve and the partnerships we build. This Sustainability Policy outlines our ongoing commitments, the actions we take to minimise our environmental footprint and the ways we work to ensure a positive impact on our community and the surrounding environment we call home.

Responsibility & Governance

Sustainability at The Waterfront Boutique Hotel and The Waterfront Kitchen Café is overseen by our management team to ensure that responsible practices are embedded in every part of our operations. Every member of our team plays an active role in delivering our sustainability goals—from reducing waste and conserving resources to supporting local businesses and nature—we are committed to meeting both local regulations and international standards, often aiming to exceed minimum compliance and expectations where possible.

As part of our responsibility and governance commitments, we aim to:

  • Comply with and exceed all relevant Falkland Islands regulations.
  • Monitor and continually improve our environmental and social performance.
  • Consider sustainability in all business decisions.
  • Increase staff knowledge and awareness through training.
  • Share our commitments with guests before and during their stay.
  • Review and update this policy annually.

Environmental Management

Our commitment to environmental management and stewardship at The Waterfront Boutique Hotel and The Waterfront Kitchen Café guides the way we plan, operate and continuously improve our facilities and services. We recognise that our day-to-day activities have a direct impact on the natural environment of the Falkland Islands and it’s for this reason that we actively work to reduce our carbon footprint, minimise waste, conserve water and prevent pollution across all areas of our business.

As part of our environmental management commitments, we aim to:

Energy Management

  • Ensure our electricity comes primarily from the Falkland Islands’ wind-powered grid.
  • Utilise the business’ electric vehicle for guest transfers and hotel errands.
  • Monitor energy use and continue to invest in efficient appliances.
  • Introduce solar power to further increase renewable energy use.
  • Publish the percentage of renewable energy used once solar systems are installed.
  • Provide educational information in guest areas to raise awareness of clean-energy initiatives.

Water Management

  • Collect and reuse rainwater for garden irrigation and vehicle washing.
  • Display water-saving messages in guest bathrooms.
  • Monitor water consumption annually to identify opportunities for further reduction.
  • Encourage guests to reuse towels and linens to conserve water.

Waste Management

  • Recycle paper, glass and other materials wherever facilities permit.
  • Repurpose rainwater to reduce freshwater use.
  • Operate a towel and linen reuse programme.
  • Prioritise bulk purchasing and minimal packaging where possible.
  • Use up existing stocks of single-use plastic amenities and transition to refillable, biodegradable or compostable alternatives.

Pollution Management

  • Use eco-certified cleaning and maintenance products where possible.
  • Ensure waste is disposed of responsibly through the appropriate facilities.
  • Reduce vehicle emissions through the use of our electric vehicle.

Sustainable Food & Local Products

Supporting local suppliers is central to our business philosophy. We prioritise the use of locally produced, seasonal ingredients in our restaurant whenever they are available—supporting local farmers and suppliers. We proudly highlight these ingredients on our menus so guests can experience the flavours that the Falkland Islands has to offer.

Throughout the hotel, we display local artwork, crafts and handmade products—celebrating the talent and creativity found within our community.

As part of our commitment to procuring sustainable food and local products, we aim to:

  • Use locally sourced ingredients in our kitchen wherever possible.
  • Highlight local flavours and ingredients through special dishes and menu features.
  • Showcase local handicrafts, artwork and produce throughout the hotel.
  • Share the stories of the local suppliers and artists featured in our property.
